  • FINALLY Resolved My V70 Transmission Issue

Alright ya'll, had to share because I've been combating this issue since I picked up my rad red 1999 V70 GLT FWD Auto wagon. My first turbo car, and first fwd Volvo. I had no service history, and had I known how to look for the red flagsof all that slipping in first gear I probably wouldn't have bought it. Previous owner had also removed the lightbulbs for every check engine light....

I was too excited so I bought it anyway. Long story short, after MONTHS of scratching my head, sitting on the fence on what I would do with this thing, right before paying someone to throw a new transmission in it I decided what the heck? Take a quick trip to the picknpull after work, grab a TCM from another 99-2000 P80 and throw it in.

and BOOM. That was it! No more flashing red arrow of death, no more CLEARLY being bogged down by an emergency limp mode. She shifts perfectly, and has all the pick up and go at the starting line that I could ever ask for. I AM SO HAPPY.

Let this be a lesson to ya'll that there is always a new move to make when troubleshooting, and that if you keep trying you WILL succeed.

    Cheers!~

    Edit-

All the while I had the P1618 code, which I actually still have along with a CEL. No flashing arrow and no more limited transmission function, but I still need to resolve this code to be all set. Progress, though. Progress!

Lucky you! The later P2s TCU is Vin locked to the car so that isn't an option. My 2005 P2R is suffering from transmission issues that, so far, have not been resolved.

    3 used transmissions
finally got one that allowed forward movement

1 new, not remanufactured, valve body

8 new, not remanufactured, shift solenoids

    2 gallons, new trans fluid

    XeMODeX tested TCU

    set adaptations , fail

red triangle of death, trans service urgent message, limp mode. NO matter what I do, transmission still not repaired.

    ANY IDEAS?

I received my Vida DICE unit yesterday and am just about to go check it out.
I'm just so over this car. In my professional opinion the P2R is junk. Way to fragile. Parts are crazy expensive. Not terribly difficult to work on just not like volvo of years ago. And the worst transmission I've ever owned. If I can't get it to work properly I'll either have a CAR-B-QUE or go M66. MAYBE. but in reality, it'll go up for sale and will get more aggressive marketing.

Glad you got your issue resolved! I am in the middle of trying to resolve mine. I bought it in March knowing it was in limp mode and assuming (I know, that's the problem) it just needed a PNP switch from my little bit of research, as I'm new to Volvos. I changed it out, and while it goes through all the gears just fine, and functions perfectly, I still get the flashing arrow. I think its time to bite the bullet and get a VIDA Dice unit myself and see if it might be a solenoid or just a code that needs to be cleared.

I did the same thing, replaced my PNP Switch because the old one had some sketchy wiring done to it. It didn't fix my issue, and yeah I think getting your own VIDA DICE setup going will really help you focus in on the problem. Good luck!

Hey guys whats up i have a 1998 volvo v70xc and had transmission issues for awhile glad to hear you got your issues worked out with a simple Tcm change. my issues have been going on for a good while my reverse gear has been slipping for the last 8 years and then a few weeks ago the forward gears started slipping my car has 218,000 miles on it.

after recieving my stimulus check i decided to have the transmission rebuilt the shop i took it to is a volvo specialist over in torrance california a place called Atlas transmission service the complete rebuilt cost me 1500.00 total and it was worth it because i plan on keeping the car for a long time the amount of parts he replaced on my transmission was huge and i was supprised that he was able to keep the price low too the items that he replaced were--

              Master rebuild kit
              Bushing kit
              Bearing kit
              Sprag
              Reverse hub
              Steel plate
              New Torque converter
              New valve body
              New solenoid set
              Volvo branded transmission fluid
              Volvo Trans filter

Transmission is fantastic now glad i had it fixed sometimes its better to just have it rebuilt then grabbing used transmissions or junkyard units dont get me wrong either there was another shop i friend of mine told me to go to that was a volvo specialist too but they wanted close to 3000.00 i was like uhhhh yea right.

Sounds like you made the right move getting your original transmission rebuilt! I'm really happy to hear you had a go do it for you, and I'd say that's a good rate compared to what I was quoted for the same job. It's amazing, this car runs so well now. I had no idea how FAST my V70 was until it was finally out of limp mode!

Do you have any pics of your V70XC? I'd love to see.
