  • Who remembers their favorite Volvo commercial?

Who doesn't love a good car commercial, right? This is one of my favorites. What's yours?

I always liked the print ad that likened a 740 turbo wagon to a Countach with a trailer hitched on the back.

This era always gets me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIkJWnkIsbw

Loooooove seeing these beauties portrayed as if they're still brand new and exploding onto the market.

MotorWeek has a Youtube channel, where they post their old reviews. Here is some great footage of a 1985 non-turbo 240 wagon 4 speed car. So great seeing these cars in their like-new condition.

Took me a bit to find this one.
Why it's my favorite goes, obviously, way back.
My dad, always a big Buick man, came home with a "Beetle" one day to use for commuting. While we were happy to be a "Two Car Family" my brother and I were hoping for something else with the expectation that it would eventually be passed down to us when we got our licenses. When I saw this ad I was petrified. Sure, it would be humiliating to drive drive a Volkswagen to school, but not half as much as a Volvo!

Happy ending - The VW lasted about a year and was replaced with a red Austin Healey, which I did get about a year and a half later. Alls well that ends well.
Bizarre twist - 20 odd years later I handed the keys to our lovingly taken care of S70 GLT to our oldest when he received his drivers license. Halfway through college we swapped him out for my wife's Infiniti and gave the S70 to our youngest who finished high school, college, and med school in that car. So in the end, two brothers did inherit a Volvo after all.

Ok, I completely forgot about this 740 ad. I just came across it in my saved videos tab. I love that it also features a 240, and everyone is (insinuated to be) driving manual transmission, too.

The Motorweek YouTube channel regularly posts original reviews of older cars. They just posted a 780 Coupe review. Period footage and reviews are soooo good. https://youtu.be/ZlS8Agz1sCg

Oh nice! I'll have to checkout that channel and watch those reviews.

I have noticed several recent ads for other products, which feature a Volvo 240 in the background. I am a little surprised to see so many ads, in such a short time, feature a pretty specific car. I think all of these but one are currently on air. With the 240 getting to be at least 30 years old, are the cars just cheap to get a hold of? Are they still that recognizable to the general public? I'm glad to see the old bricks still out and about, anyway.
